Director-General stresses importance of partnerships at meeting of Rome-based agencies` governing bodies

FAO News 13/09/2019

13 September 2019, Rome – The FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu participated in his first informal meeting of the Rome-based UN food agencies' governing bodies, held today at WFP's headquarters.

The meeting - the third since it was introduced in 2017 and held at FAO - is an important avenue to make the FAO-IFAD-WFP collaboration even stronger, discuss issues of common concern, and put food security at the forefront of the global agenda.

The three agencies have come a long way in their shared vision and work towards a hunger-free world, and are ahead of the curve when it comes to collaboration on the ground and in ways that best serve the communities who need it most. This includes rolling out hunger-fighting interventions together and joint financing of programmes.

Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General spoke at the meeting as representative of the UN Secretary-General.

The Deputy Secretary-General lauded the FAO-IFAD-WFP collaboration, emphasising the unified approach to meet stressing challenges such as climate change, malnutrition and poverty. She acknowledged FAO's contribution to the preparation of the guidance for the new generation of UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks and FAO's close collaboration in UN country teams to advance the SDGs and strengthen the coherence between humanitarian and development action in advancing food security.

Speaking at the event, the FAO chief highlighted the agency's priority areas such as: providing integrated policy and technical support to member countries; supporting the strengthening of data collection and analysis; fostering partnerships; and leveraging scaled up finance and investment.

"Let's learn from one another and work together," said the FAO Director-General.

Participants at the event also emphasised the link between peace and food security.

Today's meeting covers topics such as: progress on the UN reform; an update on the food and nutrition situation in drought- and conflict-stricken Sahel; furthering engagement with the private sector; and collaboration in management services.
