The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) released for pre-publication a recommendation to revise the regulations of genetically engineered organisms. According to APHIS, this will be the first extensive amendment of the regulations which were implemented since 1987. "We're pleased that USDA's proposal recognizes that some applications of gene editing result in plant varieties that are essentially equivalent to varieties developed through more traditional breeding methods, and treats these varieties accordingly," said Andy LaVigne, President and CEO of the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA).

The international pledge to eradicate a devastating livestock disease affecting mostly sheep and goats has taken on new urgency in the wake of a mass die-off of a rare Mongolian antelope. In 2015, cocoa growers in Brazil resumed exporting cocoa, after more than 20 years of crop losses and being exiled from the global market. The decline of Bahian cocoa was due to witch's broom caused by the fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa. Anete Pereira de Souza, professor at the University of Campinas's Biology Institute (IB-UNICAMP) in São Paulo State, in collaboration with researchers from several universities and research institutions in Bahia studied the genetic structure and molecular diversity of cocoa varieties grown in Bahia for over 200 years.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) have released the first public genome sequence of Coffea arabica, the species providing 70% of global coffee production. Arabica coffee is a hybrid cross derived from robusta coffee (C. canephora) and the closely related C. eugenioides. As a result, C. arabica's complex genome has four sets of chromosomes, while most plants (and also humans) have only two chromosome sets.

Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco have found a way to switch off the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing system using newly identified anti-CRISPR proteins that are produced by bacterial viruses. The newly discovered anti-CRISPR proteins could enable more precise control in CRISPR applications, but also provide a fail-safe to quickly block any potentially harmful uses of the technology.
