AgEcon Expert Warns About Effects of Mandatory GM Food Labeling

Mandatory labeling of genetically modified (GM) food products on both sides of the Atlantic has led to reduced choice, higher food industry costs, and elevated consumer prices. This is according to the PG Economics report authored by agricultural economist Graham Brookes.

Supporters of mandatory GM food labeling have long argued that the main reason is to inform consumers about what they buy and eat. However, with over 20 years of evidence from countries and regions implementing mandatory labeling, it was shown that the policy has failed and led to adverse effects on the market. In contrast, consumers and taxpayers had more food choices with lower costs in territories where labeling is voluntary.

“Voluntary labeling initiatives are better able to deliver more informed consumer choice at a lower net cost to society. Policymakers around the world should not repeat these mistakes when considering the issue of labeling for gene-edited foods,” Brookes warned.
