FAO Releases 2021 Report on State of Food and Agriculture

Lack of proper preparation will lead to unpredictable shocks that will impact global agrifood systems. This is according to the recently released report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2021 titled Making Agrifood Systems More Resilient to Shocks and Stresses.

Agrifood systems faced shocks and stresses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This further boosted global food insecurity and malnutrition. Thus, necessary actions must be taken to make agri-food more resilient, efficient, sustainable, and inclusive.

The SOFA 2021 highlights the country-level indicators of the resilience of agri-food systems. The indicators measure the robustness of primary production and food availability, as well as physical and economic access to food. Thus, they can be used to evaluate the capacity of national agri-food systems to absorb shocks and stresses, a key aspect of resilience. The report aims to provide guidance on policies promoting food supply chain resilience, support livelihoods in the agrifood system, and ensure sustainable access to safe, sufficient, nutritious food for the global population.
