The socio-economic impacts of biotech crops have been documented in the last 23 years (1996-2018) showing that biotech crops have contributed to increasing productivity for food, feed, and fiber; supporting self-sufficiency on a nation's arable land; conserving biodiversity; mitigating climate change challenges; and improving economic, health, and social status of adopters.
ISAAA documents the latest data on the adoption and distribution of biotech crops since the first year of commercialization in 1996, as well as the country situations and future prospects of the technology. In 2019, the 24th year of adoption, ISAAA recorded 29 countries that planted a total of 190.4 million hectares of biotech crops. The report, Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops: 2019 (ISAAA Brief 55), is now available on the ISAAA website.
