ASCA7 Provides Platform for Learning, Collaboration, and Empowerment

ISAAA September 11, 2024

FuturaGene's VP for Public Affairs Dr. Mike May highlighted the role of gene technology in contributing exponential solutions to world's pressing problems. He said that unlocking such technologies must be part of the economic and political priorities to drive growth. He said this during his talk on bioethical considerations and stewardship of biotechnology products during the 7th Asian Short Course on Agribiotechnology, Biosafety Regulation, and Communication (ASCA7) held on September 2-6, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand.

Over 40 participants and resource speakers from 10 countries joined the five-day short course organized by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), Inc. and the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC).
ASCA is designed to equip Asian scientists, regulators, and other biotech players with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of agri-biotech. Each year, the short course evolves to fit the prevailing needs of biotech stakeholders. Thus, ASCA7 offered new topics such as bioethics, product stewardship, visual communication, and risk communication. Dr. Piyarat Thammakijjawat, Director of Biotechnology Research and Development Office, Thailand's Department of Agriculture (DoA) shared about the newly implemented regulations for gene editing.

Aside from lectures from experts in biotechnology research, regulations, and communication, the participants also visited facilities at the Rice Science Center and Central Laboratory of Kasetsart University-Kampaengsan Campus, Air Orchids and Lab, Lopburi Seed Research and Development Center, and Suwan Farm. In between the lectures and tours, the participants were able to network and plan possible collaborations.

ASCA7 is co-organized by Thailand's DoA, Biotechnology Alliance Association, FuturaGene, Murdoch University, Corteva, Agriculture and Food Systems Institute, PtBio, US Soybean Export Council, and US Grains Council.
