The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) GMO Panel has released its Scientific Opinion on the safety of soy leghemoglobin produced from genetically modified (GM) Komagataella phaffii for use in food in the European Union.
The assessment showed that the GMO Panel did not identify safety concerns regarding the toxicity and allergenicity of soy leghemoglobin protein as expressed in K. phaffii. There was also no evidence showing that the genetic modification would change the overall allergenicity of K. phaffii.
EFSA GMO Panel said that the LegH Prep derived from GM K. phaffii strain MXY0541 is safe for human health or the environment at the proposed use and use level. The analysis of potential horizontal gene transfer from LegH Prep from K. phaffii strain MXY0541 also showed no safety concerns. The Panel concludes that the genetic modification does not lead to safety issues.
