FSANZ Opens Public Comment Period for GM Sugar Beet

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announced their invitation for public comments on the approval for the sale and use of food derived from genetically modified (GM) sugar beet line KSW20-1.

 

GM sugar beet, developed by experts from Bayer CropScience, is tolerant to in-crop applications of dicamba, glufosinate, and glyphosate herbicides. Thus, it offers growers a broad spectrum weed management system for sugar beet production. GM sugar beet can also provide a solution to herbicide-resistant broadleaf and grass weeds.

 

Based on the data provided by the developers, together with other available information, food derived from GM sugar beet is considered to be as safe as food derived from conventional non-GM sugar beet varieties for human consumption.

 

Submissions through FSANZ's Consultation Hub will be accepted until October 28, 2024.
