ISAAA December 11, 2024
The Government of Japan has approved a total of 334 genetically modified products for food use as of September 2024. This is according to the latest USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report about the status of agricultural biotechnology in Japan.
Japan continues to be a major importer of GM food and feed, sourcing mostly from the US. Other major exporters include Canada, Brazil, and Argentina. According to the Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) report, 15 million tons of corn, 3.3 million tons of soybeans, 2 million tons of canola, and billions of dollars of processed foods with GM-derived ingredients were imported for the marketing year 2022-2023.
As of October 2024, Japan has approved 205 products for environmental safety, including 157 approvals for domestic cultivation. However, Japanese farmers do not cultivate any GM seeds. A total of seven gene-edited products have completed the necessary consultation and notification processes and four of these are currently available in the domestic market.
