Nobel Prize Honors Scientists Who Discovered MicroRNA

This year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Drs. Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun, the scientists who discovered microRNA and its function in post-transcriptional gene regulation.
Drs. Ambros and Ruvkun revealed how microRNAs, a group of tiny molecules, help control the types and amounts of proteins produced in cells. Without microRNAs, cells and tissues do not develop normally. Furthermore, abnormal regulation of microRNAs may lead to cancer and other disorders. The study of Ambros and Ruvkun with nematodes called Caenorhabditis elegans led to microRNA discovery and revealed a new dimension to gene regulation, vital for all complex life forms.
Dr. Ambros is currently a Silverman Professor of Natural Science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, MA, while Dr. Ruvkun is a Professor of Genetics at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been granted to scientists who have made breakthroughs for the benefit of humankind. The Nobel Assembly, consisting of 50 professors at Karolinska Institutet, awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
