Leading agricultural researchers and scientists from 10 CGIAR Research Programs (CRP) convened in Bern, Switzerland on 6 September at the Swiss International Conference on Research for Development.

CRP leaders participated in three panel sessions, facilitated by CGIAR and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), discussing production landscapes, improved nutrition and sustainable value chains with various Swiss institutions.

Switzerland and CGIAR share a rich history dating back to 1971. As a major CGIAR partner, Switzerland contributes financial, scientific and technical resources, while supporting and influencing CGIAR policies.

The focus of Swiss development aid is primarily on poverty alleviation and peace, for a sustainable development. To achieve these goals, the SDC concentrates on various thematic priorities including food security, climate change, environment, water and health. Which are closely aligned with the CGIAR’s three goals to reduce poverty, improve food and nutrition security for health and improve natural resources and ecosystem services.

Switzerland supports CGIAR in two very specific ways, by helping to strengthen the CGIAR System and fostering national agricultural research and consultancy in Swiss priority countries between CGIAR Research Programs and leading Swiss universities, advanced research institutes, development organizations, private sector and government agencies.

The fourth International Conference on Research for Development (ICRD) presented visionary contributions that will enhance transformations towards sustainability in developing countries. Researchers, policymakers and partners shared knowledge from their fields of expertise, and engaged in discussing synergies and trade-offs with other SDGs linked to their topics.

At ICRD, CRP leaders discussed with members of Swiss universities, development organizations, NGOs and the private sector regarding how their Programs’ goals and initiatives could align with the organizations’ objectives, with the aim of strengthening international collaboration.

With the wide range of participants from Swiss institutions and representatives from CGIAR Research Programs on Fish; Forests, Trees and Agroforestry; Livestock; Maize; Roots, Tubers and Bananas; Wheat; Agriculture for Nutrition and Health; Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security; Policies, Institutions and Markets; and Water, Land and Ecosystems, discussions varied from value and market chains, organic farming, capacity development, crop improvement and yield potential, and information on various collaborations.
