Vietnam is striving to take stronger measures to achieve “net-zero emissions” by 2050. Agriculture has been recognized as a bright spot in the economic development of 2023. Economic and market intelligence played an important part in the sector's growth last year. Traditionally, farmers focused on how to improve production, but higher yields did not always translate to increased income. As prices fluctuate, they may produce more but gain less.

Vietnam Economic Pulse (VEP) has sustained the recovery from Covid-19 to create the prospects for growth in 2023. Finally, the real GDP growth in 2022 reached 8.02% (General Statistics Office of Vietnam). It is the highest among major countries in the Asia Pacific region. Vietnam economic conditions have improved dramatically. The GDP per capita obtained $US 4,110.  Thanks are due to an effective and universal Covid-19 vaccination program, and a flexible policy response, the domestic economy has rebounded strongly from the last quarter of 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic made the Vietnam GDP in the third quarter decrease by 6.2 per cent as compared to the same period last year. Finally, the real GDP growth in 2021 reached 2.5% (General Statistics Office of Vietnam). Before that, both the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM), under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, and the World Bank were optimistic about Việt Nam’s economy in 2021, predicting growth of 6.0 per cent and 6.8 per cent, respectively.

The export turnover of agriculture obtained $US 41.25 billion (2.6% increased); including agro-products ($18.49 B), husbandry products ($0.32 B), aqua-products ($8.38 B) and processed wood & furniture products ($13.17 B). The trade surplus in term of agriculture got $USD 10.29 billion. The conversion of rice cultivated areas with low economic efficiency into other crops, fishery, orchards, etc. was recognized as 128,000 ha, including 99,000 ha and 29,000 ha in South and North, respectively.

After peaking at 7.1% in 2018, real GDP growth in 2019 expanded 7.02 %, fueled by a robust expansion of the processing and manufacturing sector and service sector, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO). Economic and political reforms under Đổi Mới (renovation), launched in 1986, have spurred rapid economic growth, transforming what was then one of the world’s poorest nations into a lower middle-income country.

The GDP growth of 7.08 per cent in 2018 is an impressive figure ($US 2,587 per capita); despite slowing global trade due to geopolitical tensions and the US-China trade war. The Vietnamese economy continued to record a variety of notable achievements. Vietnam’s macroeconomic foundations were maintained, with inflation contained at 3.6% and core inflation remaining stable below 1.5%, while major balances of the economy were guaranteed.

Following impressive GDP growth of 6.81 per cent in 2017, the government has released a set of measures and priorities to achieve socio-economic development targets in 2018. Vietnam set a target of 2.94 per cent growth for the agriculture sector, with exports hitting $36.37 billion (a new record). The economy of Vietnam is the 47th largest economy in the world measured by nominal gross domestic product (GDP) and 35th largest in the world measured by purchasing power parity (PPP).

Despite the economic slump that is affecting other emerging economies in the region, the Vietnamese economy is expected to outperform its regional peers both this year and in the next few. The GDP growth for 2015 is expected to be 6.68% (the highest since 2007). The GDP expanded 7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2015 over the same quarter of the previous year.
