Alzheimer's disease has a widespread impact around the globe, but its biological cause or mechanism is still unclear. Heparan sulfate–modified proteins have been suggested to cause Alzheimer's, but further research is necessary to identify their role in inducing the disease.

Scientists used a fruit fly model of Alzheimer's to analyze the role of heparan sulfate chains. The team identified that decreasing the function of heparan sulfate-modified proteins minimized the death of neurons and repaired cell defects. Their results are significant to human genetics research.

"These findings suggest a promising target for future treatments that could rescue the earliest abnormalities that occur in many neurodegenerative diseases," said Scott Selleck, one of the authors of the study.
