DOAN VINH. 2018. EFFECT OF MYCOTOXIN DEOXYNIVALENOL AND FUMONISIN IN ANIMAL FEED TO PERFORMANCE OF COMMERCIAL PIGS. PhD Thesis Abstract. Institute of Agricultural Sciences for Southern Vietnam; Ho Chi Minh City, VIETNAM

Study on mycotoxin has been conducted for more than 40 recent years as well as animal husbandry industry. The study aims at (1) evaluating the status and critical levels of DON and FUM, which contaminate maize and commercial feed stock for pig farms in southern Vietnam; (2) impacting to dietary with different amount of DON and FUM to perform commercial pigs; (3) assessing the effect absorbent substances using to treat contaminated feed or feedstuffs.

ABSTRACT

Study on mycotoxin has been conducted for more than 40 recent years as well as animal husbandry industry.

The study aims at (1) evaluating the status and critical levels of DON and FUM, which contaminate maize and commercial feed stock for pig farms in southern Vietnam; (2) impacting to dietary with different amount of DON and FUM to perform commercial pigs; (3) assessing the effect absorbent substances using to treat contaminated feed or feedstuffs.

Accordingly, survey of 20 feed mills in Ho Chi Minh City and others has been conducted to notice that prevalence of DON and FUM level in maize and animal foodstuff was significantly high. Up to 52% of maize samples were infected by DON with the average content of 6,844 ppb. Then 70% of maize samples were infected by FUM with the average content of 8,901 ppb. Of them, 38.33% samples of commercial foodstuff for pigs contained DON (3,483 ppb) and 45% contained FUM (4,922 ppb). DON mycotoxin had adversely affected pigs’ growth performance. DON contamination at levels of 3.4, 7.7 and 17.7 ppm reduced body weight gain (BWG) of pigs about 2.8, 8.0 and 14.5%, respectively, and increased the feed conversion ratio (FCR) up to 3.0, 5.1 and 10.8%, then the mortality rate by 6.25, 8.75 and 11.25%, respectively as compared to non-DON diet. Added absorbents improved BWG as 2, 5 and 11% and FCR as  1% to 6.7%. Mortality rate of treated pigs were reduced 1.25, 2.50 and 3.75% as compared to treatment without the supplementation. FUM mycotoxin affected to pigs’ growth performance. FUM contamination at 4.8, 9.8 and 20.0 ppm in diets reduced BWG of 4.9, 9.7 and 17.8%, respectively. It also increased FCR of 3.0, 5.1 and 10.8%, respectively as compared to the control. The mortality of 7.5, 8.75 and 10.0% was noticed. Added absorbent improved BWG 1.1, 4.3 and 15.5% in diets contained FUM at the levels of 4.8, 9.8 and 20 ppm, respectively. It reduced FCR from 1.0 to 6.1%. Added absorbent into diet reduced mortality by 2.5, 5.0 and 3.75% as compared to the control.
