OGTR Receives Application for GM Wheat Field Trial in Australia
Monday, 2024/03/18 | 08:08:37

ISAAA March 13, 2024

Australia's Office of the Gene Technology Regulator announced the notification of application for the conduct of field trials of genetically engineered wheat with enhanced tolerance to environmental stress. The application was submitted by Trigall Australia Pty Ltd.

The application indicated a proposed trial spanning for 5 years in 10 sites, a maximum of 20 hectares per year. These trials will be conducted in the wheat-growing area of Australia, including New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia. Once approved, the contained planting will be subject to control measures to ensure that the GM wheat will not spread to other locations and will not be consumed as food or feed.

According to OGTR, a risk assessment and risk management plan is currently being prepared and will be available in their website for public comment and expert advice by June 2024.

Read the Notification of Application for more information.
