Epigenomics is represented by the high-throughput investigations of genome-wide epigenetic alterations, which ultimately dictate genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic dynamism. Rice has been accepted as the global staple crop. As a result, this model crop deserves significant importance in the rapidly emerging field of plant epigenomics. A large number of recently available data reveal the immense flexibility and potential of variable epigenomic landscapes.

In this study, an efficient ethanol production process using simultaneous saccharification and viscosity reduction of raw cassava pulp with no prior high temperature pre-gelatinization/liquefaction step was developed using a crude starch- and cell wall-degrading enzyme preparation from Aspergillus aculeatus BCC17849. Proteomic analysis revealed that the enzyme comprised a complex mixture of endo- and exo-acting amylases, cellulases, xylanases, and pectina ses belonging to various glycosyl hydrolase families

Whether coral skeleton crystals grow by attachment of ions from solution or particles from tissue determines (i) corals’ growth rate, (ii) how they survive acidifying oceans, and (iii) the isotopes in the crystals used for reconstructing ancient temperatures. Our data show that two amorphous precursors exist, one hydrated and one dehydrated amorphous calcium carbonate; that these are formed in the tissue as ∼400-nm particles; and that they attach to the surface of coral skeletons, remain amorphous for hours, and finally crystallize into aragonite.

Although it is widely accepted that the chrloroplasts in photosynthetic eukaryotes can be traced back to a single cyanobacterial ancestor, the nature of that ancestor remains debated. Chloroplasts have been proposed to derive from either early- or late-branching cyanobacterial lineages, and similarly, the timing and ecological setting of this event remain uncertain.

Oxidative damage is frequently associated with aging and aging-related disease, but, paradoxically, several recent studies have shown that artificial boosts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can also extend life span in young individuals. Here, we show that physiological levels of ROS promote diapause, thereby extending life span in pupae of the moth Helicoverpa armigera.

In cereal crops, the number of florets in a spikelet is an important factor affecting the grain number per panicle and then the grain yield. In wild-type rice, one spikelet produces one fertile floret. This study characterized a gain-of-function mutant lateral florets 1 (lf1) in rice. In lf1, the spikelet developed lateral florets with proper floral organ identities in the axil of the sterile lemma, showing that the rice spikelet has the potential to restore the “three-florets spikelet” which may have existed in ancestors.

The GT-1 cis-element widely exists in many plant gene promoters. However, the molecular mechanism that underlies the response of the GT-1 cis-element to abiotic and biotic stresses remains elusive in rice. We previously isolated a rice short-chain peptide encoding gene, Os2H16, and demonstrated that it plays important roles in both disease resistance and drought tolerance.

In Caenorhabditis elegans, Notch signaling regulates developmentally timed sleep during the transition from L4 larval stage to adulthood (L4/A) . To identify core sleep pathways and to find genes acting downstream of Notch signaling, we undertook the first genome-wide, classical genetic screen focused on C. elegans developmentally timed sleep. To increase screen efficiency, we first looked for mutations that suppressed inappropriate anachronistic sleep in adult hsp::osm-11 animals overexpressing the Notch coligand OSM-11 after heat shock.

Increases in human life expectancy over the next century will be accompanied by increased frailty and massive and unsustainable health care costs. Developing means to extend the time that individuals remain healthy and free of age-related infirmities, called healthspan, has therefore become a critical goal of aging research. We show that small molecules produced by the microbiota and related to indole extend healthspan in geriatric worms, flies, and mice, without attendant effects on lifespan.

Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (Mccp) is a common pathogen of goats that causes contagious caprine pleuropneumonia. We closed the gap and corrected rRNA operons in the draft genome of Mccp M1601: a strain isolated from an infected goat in a farm in Gansu, China. The genome size of M1601 is 1,016,707 bp with a GC content of 23.67%. We identified 915 genes (occupying 90.27% of the genome), of which 713 are protein-coding genes (excluding 163 pseudogenes).
