The progress of GM research is running smoothly in Cameroon, according to Dr. David Akuroh Mbah, Chief Research Officer at the Cameroon Academy of Sciences.
Confined field trials of GM cotton were initiated by Sodecotton in Cameroon in 2012. In 2015, open field trials were conducted under the observation of the National Biosafety Committee and the Competent National Authority in the Ministry of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development. Testing on cotton in the northern region of the country is scheduled to be completed this year. This trial is expected to be followed by trials on other GM crops such as rice, maize, and sorghum, which are targeted to boost agricultural productivity and combat food insecurity.
"The report on the trials is not yet published, but I can assure everything is on the right track. Bad news flies faster than good news, if something had gone wrong, everyone would have been aware," said Dr. Akuroh Mbah.
