12 New Whole Genomes of Viruses Affecting Cassava Discovered

Scientists from Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute and partners uncovered the genomes of devastating viruses causing cassava brown streak disease. The results are published in Plos One journal.

 

Every year, cassava brown streak virus (CBSV) and Ugandan cassava brown streak virus (UCBSV) cause losses of up to 100 million USD. With the recent findings, 7 CBSV and 5 UCBSV whole genomes have shed light on how to fight the disease. Through the known sequences, scientists have disproved the assumption that the viruses are limited by agro-ecological zones. Furthermore, it was deduced that there may be as many as four distinct species of virus causing the disease. The results of the study will further provide a solution to sustainable cassava production.
