University of Cambridge researchers were able to identify the genes responsible for parthenogenesis, or “virgin birth.” They were able to confirm the genes' function and, for the first time, engineered virgin birth to happen in an animal that is known to sexually reproduce. Initially, the researchers sequenced two strains of Drosophila mercatorum. One of the strains needed males to reproduce, while the other was known to undergo parthenogenesis.

Yield10 Bioscience, Inc. has announced that they have filed a request for a Regulatory Status Review (RSR) with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS) under the SECURE Rule for proprietary elite Camelina varieties containing genes that allow the plant to produce the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) component of omega-3 oil.

The world's population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, and demand for food is expected to increase by 50%. University of Chicago scientists led by chemist Weixin Tang have created new CRISPR systems that are smaller and can easily slip into cells yet retain their potency. Tang's team hopes that these systems could someday pave the way toward improved therapies for diseases such as sickle cell disease, Huntington's disease, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy, among many others.
