University of Cambridge researchers were able to identify the genes responsible for parthenogenesis, or “virgin birth.” They were able to confirm the genes' function and, for the first time, engineered virgin birth to happen in an animal that is known to sexually reproduce. Initially, the researchers sequenced two strains of Drosophila mercatorum. One of the strains needed males to reproduce, while the other was known to undergo parthenogenesis.

A group of scientists from different institutions has discovered a protein's step-by-step activation process. The results of this study can be used for future therapeutic purposes. Researchers from Ohio State University, California Institute of Technology, and Case Western Reserve University studied the protein SPARTA, which is a short prokaryotic Argonaute (also known as Ago).

Yield10 Bioscience, Inc. has announced that they have filed a request for a Regulatory Status Review (RSR) with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS) under the SECURE Rule for proprietary elite Camelina varieties containing genes that allow the plant to produce the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) component of omega-3 oil.

Andi M. Saleh, Coordinator of the Assessment and Variety Dissemination Subgroup of the Seed Directorate of the Directorate General of Food Crops of the Ministry of Agriculture said that the government encourages the development of new varieties both through hybrid technology and biotechnology. In a new ISAAA publication titled Points to Ponder on Gene Editing: Can We Edit the Future of Food?, a group of experts from around the world discuss the potential impacts of gene editing in the context of food security. The publication begins by outlining the challenges that the global food system faces. The world's population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, and demand for food is expected to increase by 50%. At the same time, climate change is making it more difficult to produce food in many parts of the world.

A two-day training workshop attended by 30 students from seven organizations of five state universities was conducted by ISAAA Inc. in partnership with the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Agriculture and Fisheries Biotechnology Program to encourage members of the youth to engage in biotech discourses and potentially become social media influencers.

University of Chicago scientists led by chemist Weixin Tang have created new CRISPR systems that are smaller and can easily slip into cells yet retain their potency. Tang's team hopes that these systems could someday pave the way toward improved therapies for diseases such as sickle cell disease, Huntington's disease, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy, among many others.

The 2023 UN Food Systems Stocktaking Moment will build on the momentum of the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS). The meeting is also intended to support the country-led momentum for food systems transformation.

A full-scale Africa-led agrifood systems transformation will not be possible without game changing solutions, greater investments in smallholder farmers and local organisations, structural transformation, innovations, and partnerships at all levels. This was a key takeaway from a high-level special event held on the sidelines of the United Nations Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS2+) entitled “Building Africa's food sovereignty and resilience through sustainable investments,” which was organized by the Interdepartmental Task Force on African Affairs (IDTFAA).
