Malaysia Set to Open First Cultivated Meat Facility in 2024

Cell Agritech, Malaysia's first cultivated meat company, is set to start the construction of its first plant in Penang by 2024. While regulations for cultivated meat are still unclear in Malaysia, Cell Agritech aims to launch its products into the Asian market by 2025.

 

The announcement was made in mid-March by Jason Ng Chin Aikm, Cell AgriTech's founder, during Malaysia's first Cultivated Meat Conference held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Cell AgriTech says it aims to be one of the world's most cost-efficient cultivated meat companies with expertise on scaling up and manufacturing bioprocesses and is poised to produce cultivated meat at less than US$10 per kilogram.

 

The company is teaming up with Singapore's cultivated seafood company Umami Meats to cultivate certain species of tuna and eel grown with non-GM cell lines. Recently, Umami partnered with California-based Triplebar to collaborate on improving cell lines to produce cultivated seafood more efficiently.
