Ukranian Parliament Adopts Law on GMOs
Thursday, 2023/09/28 | 08:19:35

Ukraine's Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, adopted in general the Draft Law No. 5839 "On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities and State Control over the Circulation of Genetically Modified Organisms and Genetically Modified Products to Ensure Food Security."

The law will allow Ukrainian legislation to be in line with the European Union's (EU) GMO legislation, as the document is based on the 8 major acts of the EU law on GMOs. According to the release, “The law introduces European mechanisms for the state registration of GMOs, and bans their cultivation and circulation. The law also establishes the use of labels that state, “with GMOs”, “without GMOs”, “produced from GMO raw materials” — in accordance with EU legislation.

The implementation of the new Law will help increase the efficiency and transparency of state regulation of GMOs, create clear and transparent rules for doing business with GMOs, and de-shadow the market of GMOs. This Law will enter into force on the day following the day of its publication and will come into effect three years after its entry into force.
