Pakistan Biotechnology Information Center Karachi held a seminar on New Breeding Technologies for Food and Nutritional Security on March 18, 2021, in Faisalabad, Pakistan.
Kanwarpal Dhugga, a principal scientist of biotechnology, specifically editing genes for disease resistance in maize and wheat working at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) talked about gene editing of wheat and maize. Dr. Magdy M. Mahfouz from King Abdullah University, Saudi Arabia, talked about the recent updates in gene editing. Dr. Shahid Mansoor informed the participants about the new and ongoing initiatives under consideration to improve crop and livestock health and production. PABIC Karachi Director, Prof. Iqbal Choudhary, urged the Government to adopt biotechnology tools to address the needs of the rapidly growing population of Pakistan.
The event was attended by more than 400 participants from various countries worldwide. PABIC Karachi co-organized the event with the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering and UK-Pak Science & Innov. Global Network.
