A research conducted by Casaluker's Granja Luker, a cocoa research center in Colombia, has led to the discovery and analysis of 14 genomes of Colombian cocoa.

The study, which was conducted in collaboration with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and Yale University, is the first of its kind in the world and involved extracting the DNA of 14 cocoa varieties from a sample of Fino de Aroma trees, the most sought after variety in the world produced in Colombia. The researchers initially identified 10 million sequences, of which 5.5 million were retained and filtered. Special markers were obtained in this final sample that showed the differences existing among the 14 genomes studied.
