A study published in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology explored U.S. public opinion on gene editing in agricultural and medical fields. The study highlighted the relationship between opinions about the safety of gene editing and the potential impact of providing evidence in improving their opinions.

Results of the study show that the respondents were more aware and more likely to have opinions on the safety of gene editing applications in agriculture than in the medical field. The researchers believed that their level of familiarity is likely to result from the discussions and conversations about genetically modified (GM) foods in the country. Over 4,500 respondents opined positively on gene editing as indicated by their response that gene editing is deemed safe.

The researchers see the current situation as an opportunity to create more public dialogues that could share evidence of safety in agricultural applications of gene editing to generate more positive opinions. The findings of this study also call for the development of tailor-fitted messaging and strategies to engage the public and enhance positive opinions and support for gene editing.
