Given that the global population is set to reach some 9 billion by 2050 and that the impact of climate change is already clearly visible, the world is facing a triple challenge: that of food security, adaptation to climate change, and climate change mitigation.

That triple challenge constitutes the three pillars of climate-smart agriculture.
This approach sets out to encourage and help farmers, countries and other stakeholders implement policies and steps aimed at:

  • sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and farmers' incomes so as to achieve national food security and development objectives;
  • boosting the resilience of farming and food systems and their adaptation to climate change;
  • mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and promoting carbon sequestration.

Upstream of "Paris Climat 2015" (21st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), to be held at Paris-Le Bourget from 30 November to 11 December, this event will be the first of two major international scientific events in France.

The second, "Our Common Future under Climate Change", will cover every aspect of climate change, and is to be held at UNESCO in Paris from 7 to 10 July 2015.
