Biotech Rice Expressing CP4-EPSPS Shows Glyphosate Tolerance

A study by a group of researchers of National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology (NRCPB) and Institute of Biotechnology, ANGRAU, India reports that the transgenic herbicide tolerant rice could tolerate up to 1% of commercial Roundup, which is five times more than the usual dose used to kill weeds under field conditions.

This is very significant because of its novelty and efficacy to tolerate Glyphosate and suggests that herbicide tolerant transgenic rice plants could be used efficiently to overcome weed menace in direct seeded rice (DSR) and thereby promote conservation agriculture.

Weed infestation is one of the major biotic stress factors that is responsible for yield loss in rice, especially in direct seeded rice (DSR). This study reports that transgenic rice plants could be used efficiently to overcome weed menace under DSR.
