| China Approves Gene-edited Wheat and GM Maize |
|
China, the world leader in both wheat production and consumption, granted the first approval for gene-edited wheat variety enhanced to resist disease. This marks a significant step forward for new breeding innovations in the country, considering wheat is a staple ingredient in foods like pasta, noodles, and bread. Origin Agritech also announced the release of GMO safety certificate for its genetically modified (GM) maize, BBL2-2, from China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

China, the world leader in both wheat production and consumption, granted the first approval for gene-edited wheat variety enhanced to resist disease. This marks a significant step forward for new breeding innovations in the country, considering wheat is a staple ingredient in foods like pasta, noodles, and bread.
Origin Agritech also announced the release of GMO safety certificate for its genetically modified (GM) maize, BBL2-2, from China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. BBL2-2 maize has two insect resistance genes, Cry1Ab and Cry3Bb, and one herbicide tolerance gene, Cp4-epsps. These modifications confers resistance to different Lepidopteran pests such as corn borer, cotton bollworm, and armyworm. The approval implies that the GM maize passed the stringent safety standards, leading to the commercial release of the crop.
