Combined Traditional Farming Practices and Modern Biotechnology Can Help Achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals

A paper published in the Journal of Biotechnology highlights the need for combined organic farming techniques and modern biotechnology to meet increasing global food demands. The paper suggests neither method can address future food production challenges in isolation. Researchers from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir and the University of Oxford say that the way forward for a greener future is through the modernization of genetically modified (GM) agriculture.

Aside from reducing the use of synthetic agrochemicals, the researchers also recommend the use of robotics and AI-based environment-friendly technologies.

The researchers also mentioned using high-value pleiotropic genes to further improve farm productivity. They believe that these agricultural practices will ultimately help meet the targets of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
