FSANZ Calls for Submissions on GM Potato

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announced the call for submissions on biotech potato line E12, which has reduced acrylamide potential and reduced browning traits. It was developed by Simplot and has been approved for commercial use in the U.S. and Canada.

According to FSANZ CEO, Steve McCutcheon, the potato was modified through insertion of genetic sequences of potato and its wild varieties. Upon assessment of FSANZ, they have not found any public health and safety concerns regarding the biotech potato. To come up with a decision whether to adopt, amend, or reject the application, they are asking for public review until September 30, 2016.
