A high yielding hybrid maize seed, YH-1898, developed jointly by the breeders of Maize and Millets Research Institute of Sahiwal and the Punjab Seed Corporation (PSC) was launched in Pakistan on February 23, 2015.
Punjab Agriculture Minister Dr. Farrukh Javed, who was the guest speaker at the launching ceremony, said that the milestone will help the agriculture sector in Pakistan. Dr. Javed praised the efforts of PSC, saying that the price of local maize hybrids would be at least three times less than imported seed, which would substantially reduce the production cost for the farmers. He added that a number of projects implementing Vision 2025 of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, have been initiated, and this will increase the export of agriculture products through promoting value-added technology to meet WTO standards. Under Vision 2025, the Punjab government has taken valuable initiatives to introduce various farmer-friendly policies to strengthen the national economy as well as to ensure prosperity of the farming community.
