Researchers Fine-Tune CRISPR-Cas9 Gene Editing in Common Bean

A study from Frontiers in Plant Science shows that the hairy root transformation system allowed a rapid evaluation of multiple single guide RNA (sgRNA) and promoters in common beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.). Results also indicate that the Lindel repair model is deemed the most effective tool for predicting sgRNA efficiency and the type of induced mutation in most hairy roots in common beans.

Common bean is a good source of dietary protein and other essential nutrients. However, recent advancements in plant biotechnology using CRISPR-Cas9 are prone to error and would edit a few base pairs in small numbers. Furthermore, the currently available bioinformatic programs for designing sgRNAs, CRISPOR and RGEN, have limited applications to plant systems. Hence, the researchers developed a rapid and efficient screening method to validate sgRNA efficiency in common beans.

The results of this research accelerate the goal of developing stable transgenic lines of common beans with improved nutritional content for human and animal consumption.
