The public consultation on the European Commission's proposals on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) opened in Ireland on September 4, 2023, and ran for three weeks, closing on September 25. Ireland's Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine received 60 submissions to the consultation which sought the public's views on NGTs.
The European Commission released the Proposal on NGTs on July 25, 2023, and suggests that plants resulting from targeted mutagenesis and cisgenesis be categorized separately from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and introduces a notification process for “conventional-like” category 1 plants to confirm their status.
Farmers and the public were invited to submit their views on the proposals. "It is important that we engage with stakeholders and the public and to hear their views on this important issue and I welcome the wide consultation already undertaken by the Commission," said the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue. However, the Department of Agriculture received a small number of submissions because the time for consultation was short at three weeks.
