To boost cooperation in cashew production and processing between Vietnam and Africa

The raw cashew nut production in Vietnam only accounts for about 30% of the total demand for export processing. So the way to improve productivity, output and processing between Vietnam and some African countries is very feasible. At the meeting of the African Union for the African Union (ACA) held in Benin, Le Quy Kha, Deputy Director of the Institute of Agricultural Science of the South, said at the conference.

He delivered a speech on the "keys" to help the Vietnamese cashew industry succeed in the world cashew market. This will help Africa to adjust its vision of the industry as well as facilitate exchanges of information on research, development and business.

According to TS.Kha, the factors contributing to the success of Vietnam's cashew industry are due to the abundant variety of breeders and the well-selected breeding practices. Some good varieties are recognized as PN1, AB05-08, AB29 and some other promising varieties with productivity from 2-3 tons / ha. After 8 years of planting in the business period, together with pruning techniques (rejuvenating old garden) and intensive cultivation techniques (fertilizing with nitrogen, potassium) growth stimulation. Thus, the average cashew yield in Vietnam is 1.2-1.3 tons / ha, even the area of intensive cultivation and improvement is from 2 to 2.5 tons / ha. The application of integrated pest control also contributes to stabilizing productivity.

In addition, the agricultural extension work and the "four houses" policy; The results of the research and extension program, the cashewnut technology manual developed by the Cashew Research Center (Southern Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology) have been published (2017). Vietnam Cashew Association (VINACAS) also works very effectively. Thanks to the perfection of cashew processing systems, Vietnam competes well with machines imported from other countries.

The African Cashew Alliance, established in 2006, is an all-African organization with the goal of enhancing African competition with the rest of the world. By the year 2027, the African cashew industry will be globally competitive, with value added products ensuring profitability for all parties involved. Restructuring the African cashew industry in a competitive, sustainable manner, supplying cashew nuts and all other domestic and export products.

Africa in 2016 produced 1.856 million tons of raw cashew and estimated 2017 to 2.018 million tons of raw cashew. All Africa now produces 58% of the world's crude, up 6% year over year 2015/2016, but up 40% in 2016/2017 due to strong demand.

Another difficulty is that average cashew yield in Africa is only 220-400 kg / ha. At the same time, the African cashew nut processing program (from 2013 to present) is stagnant, due to financial difficulties, cashew nut price fluctuations and loose participation of enterprises. So Africa is currently processing 8% of the total continent (2016). Especially, Africa appreciates the quality of Vietnam's processing machines (less post-processing rate), competitive prices for processing machines imported from Germany, Italy and China.

Kha said that in order to improve the productivity of Africa's cashew production, to meet the demand of raw materials of Vietnam, it is necessary to train technical transfer. The raw cashew nut production in Vietnam only accounts for about 30% of the total demand for export processing. So the way to improve productivity, output and processing between Vietnam and some African countries is very feasible.

According to a report by the African Coalition, in 2016, total world crude production was 2.6 million tonnes, with West African countries accounting for 47%, including Ivory Coast (650,000 tonnes), Gine Bissau Benin (110 thousand tons), Nigeria (110 thousand tons), Ghana (50 thousand tons), Autres (170 thousand tons), Eastern African countries (8%), Tanzania (170 thousand tons) Mozambique (50 thousand tons), Kenya (5 thousand tons), Asia 40%; India (500 thousand tons), Vietnam (440 thousand tons), Cambodia (60 thousand tons), Indonesia (60 thousand tons) Brazil 5%.
