Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most serious rice diseases worldwide. The early indica rice thermosensitive genic male sterile (TGMS) line HD9802S has the characteristics of stable fertility, reproducibility, a high outcrossing rate, excellent rice quality, and strong combining ability. However, this line exhibits poor blast resistance and is highly susceptible to leaf and neck blasts. In this study, backcross introduction, molecular marker-assisted selection, gene chipping, anther culture, and resistance identification in the field were used to introduce the broad-spectrum blast-resistance gene R6 into HD9802S to improve its rice blast resistance.

Potassium (K) is an essential macronutrient for plant growth, and its availability in the soil varies widely, requiring plants to respond and adapt to the changing K nutrient status. We show here that plant growth rate is closely correlated with K status in the medium, and this K-dependent growth is mediated by the highly conserved nutrient sensor, target of rapamycin (TOR).

RCO regulates the formation of lobed leaves in Brassicaceae species. RCO originated from the duplication of LMI1-type sequences and evolved through gene duplication and loss within the Brassicaceae. However, the evolutionary process and diversification of RCO in different lineages of Brassicaceae remain unclear. The color of purple carrot taproots mainly depends on the anthocyanins sequestered in the vacuoles. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are key enzymes involved in anthocyanin transport. However, the precise mechanism of anthocyanin transport from the cytosolic surface of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the vacuoles in carrots remains unclear. Salt stress is an important environmental factor affecting crop growth and development. One of the important ways to improve the salt tolerance of rice is to identify new salt-tolerance genes, reveal possible mechanisms, and apply them to the creation of new germplasm and the breeding of new varieties. In this study, the salt-sensitive japonica variety Tong 35 (T35) and salt-tolerant japonica variety Ji Nongda 709 (JND709) were used. Salt stress treatment with a 150 mmol/L NaCl solution (the control group was tested without salt stress treatment simultaneously) was continued until the test material was collected after the rice germination period.

Crop yields have been affected by many different biotic and abiotic factors. Generally, plants experience more than one stress during their life cycle, and plants can tolerate multiple stresses and develop cross-tolerance. The expected rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) can contribute to cross-tolerance. Priming is a strategy to increase yield or to maintain yield under stress conditions. Thus, our objective was to evaluate if priming the rice plants with water deficit during the vegetative stage can induce tolerance to heat stress at anthesis and to evaluate the contribution of e[CO2].

Highly efficient genetic transformation technology is beneficial for plant gene functional research and molecular improvement breeding. However, the most commonly used Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated genetic transformation technology is time-consuming and recalcitrant for some woody plants such as citrus, hampering the high-throughput functional analysis of citrus genes.
