Drought is a major production constraint of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) worldwide. The objective of this study was to identify the Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) for drought tolerance in an Andean population of Recombinant Inbred Lines (RILs). A total of 155 F5:7 RILs derived from a cross between Kijivu (drought tolerant) and Bukoba (drought susceptible) were evaluated for drought tolerance in field and pot experiments.

Capsule length (CL) has a positive effect on seed weight and yield in various agronomically important species; however, the molecular mechanism underlying long capsule trait regulation in sesame remains unknown. The inheritance analysis showed that long capsule traits (CL > 4.0 cm) were dominant over normal length (average CL = 3.0 cm) and were controlled by a single gene pair.

Loss-of-function mutations and natural variation in the gene FLOWERING LOCUS T2 (FT2) in wheat have previously been shown to affect spikelet number per spike (SNS). However, while other FT-like wheat proteins interact with bZIP-containing transcription factors from the A-group, FT2 does not interact with any of them. In this study, we used a yeast-two-hybrid screen with FT2 as bait and identified a grass-specific bZIP-containing transcription factor from the C-group, designated here as bZIPC1

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs) are the two classes of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) present predominantly in plant cells and have various gene regulatory functions at pre- and post-transcriptional levels. Previously deemed as "junk", these ncRNAs have now been reported to be an important player in gene expression regulation, especially in stress conditions in many plant species. Black pepper, scientifically known as Piper nigrum L., despite being one of the most economically important spice crops, lacks studies related to these ncRNAs.

Phytophthora root rot caused by the oomycete Phytophthora capsici is the most devastating disease in pepper production worldwide, and current management strategies have not been effective in preventing this disease. Therefore, the use of resistant varieties was regarded as an important part of disease management of P. capsici. However, our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying the defense response of pepper roots to P. capsici infection is limited.

In woody perennial plants, quantitative genetics and association studies remain scarce for root-related traits, due to the time required to obtain mature plants and the complexity of phenotyping. In grapevine, a grafted cultivated plant, most of the rootstocks used are hybrids between American Vitis species (V. rupestrisV. riparia, and V. berlandieri). In this study, we used a wild population of an American Vitis species (V. berlandieri)

Segmental introgression lines (SILs) and advanced backcross lines (ABs) can accelerate genetics and genomics research and breeding in crop plants. This study presents the development of a complete collection of SILs and ABs in pepper using Capsicum annuum cv. ‘CM334’ as the recipient parent and Capsicum baccatum ‘PBC81’, which displays various agronomically important traits including powdery mildew and anthracnose resistance, as donor parent

Transgenic crops producing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have revolutionized control of some major pests. However, more than 25 cases of field-evolved practical resistance have reduced the efficacy of transgenic crops producing crystalline (Cry) Bt proteins, spurring adoption of alternatives including crops producing the Bt vegetative insecticidal protein Vip3Aa.

Concerns regarding high maize yield losses due to increasing occurrences of drought events are growing, and breeders are still looking for molecular markers for drought tolerance. However, the genetic determinism of traits in response to drought is highly complex and identification of causal regions is a tremendous task. Here, we exploit the phenotypic data obtained from four trials carried out on a phenotyping platform

The additive genetic variance V inherent to a breeding population is a major determinant of short- and long-term genetic gain. When estimated from experimental data, it is not only the additive variances at individual loci (QTL) but also covariances between QTL pairs that contribute to estimates of VA . Thus, estimates of VA depend on the genetic structure of the data source and vary between population samples.
