Reciprocal recurrent genomic selection (RRGS) is a powerful tool for ensuring sustainable selection progress in hybrid breeding. For training the statistical model, one can use half-sib (HS) or full-sib (FS) families produced by inter-population crosses of candidates from the two parent populations. Our objective was to compare HS-RRGS and FS-RRGS for the cumulative selection gain (ΣΔG), the genetic, GCA and SCA variances (σ2G,σ2gca, σ2sca) of the hybrid population, and prediction accuracy (rgca) for GCA effects across cycles.

Development and deployment of high-yielding maize varieties with native resistance to Fall armyworm (FAW), turcicum leaf blight (TLB), and gray leaf spot (GLS) infestation is critical for addressing the food insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa. The objectives of this study were to determine the inheritance of resistance for FAW, identity hybrids which in addition to FAW resistance, also show resistance to TLB and GLS, and investigate the usefulness of models based on general combining ability (GCA) and SNP markers in predicting the performance of new untested hybrids.

There is a recent unparalleled increase in demand for rice in sub-Saharan Africa, yet its production is affected by blast disease. Characterization of blast resistance in adapted African rice cultivars can provide important information to guide growers and rice breeders. We used molecular markers for known blast resistance genes (Pi genes; n = 21) to group African rice genotypes (n = 240) into similarity clusters. We then used greenhouse-based assays to challenge representative rice genotypes (n = 56) with African isolates (n = 8) of Magnaporthe oryzae which varied in virulence and genetic lineage. The markers grouped rice cultivars into five blast resistance clusters (BRC) which differed in foliar disease severity.

Nitrogen is one of the most essential nutrient elements that play a pivotal role in regulating plant growth and development for crop productivity. Elucidating the genetic basis of high nitrogen uptake is the key to improve nitrogen use efficiency for sustainable agricultural productivity. Whereas previous researches on nitrogen absorption process are mainly focused on a few model plants or crops. To date, the causal genes that determine the efficient nitrogen uptake of watermelon have not been mapped and remains largely unknown. Here, we fine-mapped the 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase (ClACO) gene associated with nitrogen uptake efficiency in watermelon via bulked segregant analysis (BSA).

Durum wheat is particularly susceptible to Fusarium head blight (FHB) and breeding for resistance is impeded by the low genetic variation within the elite gene pool. To extend the genetic basis for FHB resistance in durum wheat, we analyzed 603 durum wheat lines from crosses of elite durum wheat with resistance donors carrying resistance alleles derived from Triticum aestivum, T. dicoccum and T. dicoccoides.

The E genome of Thinopyrum is closely related to the ABD genome of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and harbors genes conferring beneficial traits to wheat, including high yield, disease resistance, and unique end-use quality. Transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) are programmable nucleases that have entered the clinical stage. Each subunit of the dimer consists of a DNA-binding domain composed of an array of TALE repeats fused to the catalytically active portion of the FokI endonuclease. Upon DNA-binding of both TALEN arms in close proximity, the FokI domains dimerize and induce a staggered-end DNA double strand break.
