The rice root system consists of two types of lateral roots, indeterminate larger L-types capable of further branching, and determinate, short, unbranched S-types. L-type laterals correspond to the typical lateral roots of cereals whereas S-type laterals are unique to rice. Both types contribute to nutrient and water uptake and genotypic variation for density and length of these laterals could be exploited in rice improvement to enhance adaptations to nutrient and water-limited environments.

Pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] is the most economically important crop possessing crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis which has a higher water use efficiency by control of nocturnal opening and diurnal closure of stomata. To provide novel insights into the diel regulatory landscape in pineapple leaves, we performed genome-wide mapping of DNase I hypersensitive sites (DHSs) in pineapple leaves at day (2a.m.) and night (10a.m.) using a simplified DNase-seq method. As a result, totally 33340 and 28753 DHSs were found in green-tip tissue, and 29597 and 40068 were identified in white-base tissue at 2a.m. and 10a.m., respectively.

Fusarium wilt of banana (FWB) is a serious soil-borne fungal disease. In the previous century, FWB already destroyed Gros Michel-based banana cultures in Central America, and currently, the disease threatens all major banana-producing regions of the world. The causal agents of these epidemics, however, are diverse. Gros Michel was infected by a wide range of Fusarium species, the so-called Race 1 strains, whereas the contemporary Cavendish-based cultures are affected by Fusarium odoratissimum, colloquially called Tropical Race 4 (TR4). TR4 was reported in Mozambique on two commercial banana farms in 2013, but no incursions were found outside the farm boundaries in 2015, suggesting that the disease was under control.

Phytophthora infestans causes light blight on potatoes and tomatoes, which has a significant economic impact on agriculture. The management of late blight has been largely dependent on the application of synthetic fungicides, which is not an ultimate solution for sustainable agriculture and environmental safety. Biocontrol strategies are expected to be alternative methods to the conventional chemicals in controlling plant diseases in the integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

Plant breeding and selection have shaped the genetic composition of modern crops over the past decades and centuries and have led to great improvements in agronomic and quality traits. Knowledge of the genetic composition of breeding germplasm is essential to make informed decisions in breeding programs. In this study, we characterized the structure and composition of 209 barley cultivars representative of the European two-rowed spring barley germplasm of the past 190 years.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and circular RNAs (circRNAs) are the two classes of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) present predominantly in plant cells and have various gene regulatory functions at pre- and post-transcriptional levels. Previously deemed as "junk", these ncRNAs have now been reported to be an important player in gene expression regulation, especially in stress conditions in many plant species

Glucosinolate content in the two major oilseed Brassica crops—rapeseed and mustard has been reduced to the globally accepted Canola quality level (<30 μmoles/g of seed dry weight, DW), making the protein-rich seed meal useful as animal feed. However, the overall lower glucosinolate content in seeds as well as in the other parts of such plants renders them vulnerable to biotic challenges.

Cashew nut is a popular food around the world. The high-resolution profiles and dynamics of metabolomes in cashew fruits are poorly understood till now. In this study, we analyzed the temporal metabolome of cashew nut via a non-targeted method based on UHPLC-Q-Exactive-MS, and analyzed that of cashew apple via a widely targeted method based on UHPLC-QTRAP-MS/MS (MRM).

In plants, catalase (CAT) mainly scavenges H2O2 from reactive oxygen species (ROS) and regulates the growth and development. So far, genome-wide identification of CAT gene family in Saccharum has not yet been reported. Here, 16 SsCAT genes were identified based on a Saccharum spontaneum genome. They were clustered into three subfamilies, with closer genes sharing similar structures. Most SsCAT proteins contained three conserved amino acids, one active catalytic site, one heme-ligand signature, and three peroxisomal targeting signal 1 (PTS1) sequences. The cis-regulatory element prediction revealed that SsCAT genes were involved in growth and development, and in response to various hormones and stresses.

Sugarcane is an important sugar and bioenergy source and a significant component of the economy in various countries in arid and semiarid. It requires more synthetic fertilizers and fungicides during growth and development. However, the excess use of synthetic fertilizers and fungicides causes environmental pollution and affects cane quality and productivity. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) indirectly or directly promote plant growth in various ways. In this study, 22 PGPB strains were isolated from the roots of the sugarcane variety GT42.
