Worldwide, potato is the third most important crop grown for direct human consumption, but breeders have struggled to produce new varieties that outperform those released over a century ago, as evidenced by the most widely grown North American cultivar (Russet Burbank) released in 1876. Despite its importance, potato genetic diversity at the whole-genome level remains largely unexplored.

Genetic variants affecting gene-expression levels are a major source of phenotypic variation. Using 85 diverse isolates of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we mapped genetic variants that affect gene expression with 50-fold higher resolution than previously possible. By doing so, we were able to pinpoint likely causal variants and investigate their molecular mechanisms. We found that these genetic variants are generally under negative selection, but also that clinical yeast isolates have undergone positive selection for up-regulation of genes involved in biofilm suppression.

The mitochondrion-dividing (MD) ring mediates binary division of mitochondria. However, the molecular identity of the MD ring is currently unknown. We show that the glycosyltransferase MITOCHONDRION-DIVIDING RING1 (MDR1) regulates the synthesis of the polyglucan nanofilament bundle that assembles the MD ring. MDR1 is essential for mitochondrial division and forms a single ring at the mitochondrial division site in the unicellular red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae.

The development of genome editing technologies offers new prospects in improving bioenergy crops like switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). Switchgrass is an outcrossing species with an allotetraploid genome (2n = 4x = 36), a complexity which forms an impediment to generating homozygous knock-out plants. Lignin, a major component of the plant cell wall and a contributor to cellulosic feedstock’s recalcitrance to decomposition, stands as a barrier to efficient biofuel production by limiting enzyme access to cell wall polymers during the fermentation process.

Seed germination begins the growth phases of plants and its rate is affected not only by plant hormones, including abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellin (GA) and brassinosteroids (BRs), but also by environmental factors. In this study, we searched for additional chemical reagents that affect seed germination, using the det2-1 and ga1-3 mutants that showed reduced seed germination due to defective BR- or GA- biosynthesis, respectively.

Inorganic pyrophosphorylase is essential in catalyzing the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate to inorganic phosphate during plant growth. Here, we report the changes of physiological osmolytes and differentially expression genes in the transgenic rice overexpressing a soluble inorganic pyrophosphatase gene ThPP1 of Thellungiella halophila in response to AS. Analyses showed that the ThPP1 gene was a PPase family I member which is located to the cytoplasm.

Botrytis cinerea, a necrotrophic pathogenic fungus, attacks many crops including potato and tomato. Major genes for complete resistance to B. cinerea are not known in plants, but a few quantitative trait loci have been described in tomato. Loss of function of particular susceptibility (S) genes appears to provide a new source of resistance to B. cinerea in Arabidopsis.

Iron deficiency is a major problem in both developing and developed countries, and much of this can be attributed to insufficient dietary intake. Over the past decades several measures, such as supplementation and food fortification, have helped to alleviate this problem. However, their associated costs limit their accessibility and effectiveness, particularly amongst the financially constrained. A more affordable and sustainable option that can be implemented alongside existing measures is biofortification.

Cassava is the third largest source of carbohydrates for human food in the world but is vulnerable to virus diseases, which threaten to destabilize food security in sub-Saharan Africa. Novel methods of cassava disease detection are needed to support improved control which will prevent this crisis. Image recognition offers both a cost effective and scalable technology for disease detection. New deep learning models offer an avenue for this technology to be easily deployed on mobile devices.
