Because genetic variation underlies evolution, a complete understanding of evolutionary processes requires identifying and characterizing the forces determining the stability of the genome. Using mutation accumulation and whole-genome sequencing, we found that spontaneous mutation rates in three widely diverged Escherichia coli strains are nearly identical.

A long awn is one of the distinct morphological features of wild rice species. This organ is thought to aid in seed dispersal and prevent predation by animals. Most cultivated varieties of Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima, however, have lost the ability to form long awns. The causal genetic factors responsible for the loss of awn in these two rice species remain largely unknown.

Plant traits exhibit variation as a result of genetic and epigenetic change. Genetic variation is used for breeding and crop improvement. Epigenetic variation, especially differences in DNA methylation, also contributes to phenotype. For example, epigenetic alleles of plant genes exist in nature, which are identical in DNA sequence, but show heritable differences in DNA methylation and gene expression.

In pollen grains, the known function of the vegetative cell is to extend a pollen tube to transport the two sperm cells to the embryo sac for fertilization. Because the vegetative cell is much larger and more metabolically active than sperm, it has been assumed that the vegetative cell also might supply various components to sperm, but there was no direct evidence to support this hypothesis.

Bacterial plasmids have a major impact on metabolic function and adaptation of their hosts. An indigenous plasmid was identified in a Chinese isolate (GX01) of the invasive phytopathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc), the causal agent of rice bacterial leaf streak (BLS). To elucidate the biological functions of the plasmid, we have sequenced and comprehensively annotated the plasmid.

Pheophorbide a oxygenase (PAO) is an important enzyme in the chlorophyll catabolism pathway and is involved in leaf senescence. It opens the porphyrin macrocycle of pheophorbide a and finally forms the primary fluorescent chlorophyll catabolite. Previous studies have demonstrated the function of PAO during cell death. However, the characterizaton of PAO during leaf senescence induced by environmental factors is not well understood.

Axillary meristems are groups of plant pluripotent stem cells responsible for the formation of secondary axes of growth, such as branches and flowers. A crucial step in the initiation of new axillary meristems is the establishment of boundary domains that allow organ separation and prevent fusion defects during development. This work provides clues on the molecular mechanism by which the plant hormone auxin is involved in the formation of axillary meristems in maize inflorescences.

Soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsumura) is a native pest of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in eastern Asia and was detected on soybeans in North America in 2000. In 2004, the soybean cultivar Dowling was described to be resistant to soybean aphids with the Rag1 gene for resistance. In 2006, a virulent biotype of soybean aphid in Ohio was reported to proliferate on soybeans with the Rag1 gene. Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) is distinct in its high starch and low fat accumulation. However, the underlying genetic basis is still not well understood. In this study, we generated a high-quality draft genome sequence of adzuki bean by using whole-genome shotgun sequencing strategy.
