Due to an increasing demand for sustainable agricultural practices, the adoption of microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as antagonists against phytopathogens has emerged as an eco-friendly alternative to the use of agrochemicals. Here, we identified three Pseudomonas strains that were able to inhibit, in vitro, up to 80% of mycelial growth of the phytopathogenic fungus Thielaviopsis ethacetica, the causal agent of pineapple sett rot disease in sugarcane.

The precise regulation of programmed cell death (PCD) of the tapetum is crucial for the development of anthers and pollen in rice. In this study, we isolated and identified a male-sterile mutant of rice, osmyb103, which exhibited delayed tapetum degradation and defective mature pollen. Map-based cloning and genetic complementation revealed that OsMYB103 corresponded to the gene LOC_Os04g39470 and encoded a R2R3 MYB transcription factor.

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are ubiquitous supergene family which play crucial roles in detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Despite studies on GSTs, few studies have focused on them in perennial, wild plant species with high tolerance to environmental stress. Here, we identified 66 MruGST genes from the genome of Medicago ruthenica, a perennial legume species native to temperate grasslands with high tolerance to environmental stress.

The AATCA motif was identified to respond pathogens infection in the promoter of defense-related gene Os2H16. OsbHLH057 bound to the motif to positively regulate rice disease resistance and drought tolerance. Sheath blight (ShB), caused by the necrotrophic fungus Rhizoctonia solani, is a devastating disease in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The transcriptional regulation of host defense-related genes in response to R. solani infection is poorly understood. In this study, we identified a cis-element, AATCA, in the promoter of Os2H16, a previously identified multifaceted defense-related gene in rice that responded to fungal attack.

Abiotic stresses are emerging as a potential threat to sustainable agriculture worldwide. Soil salinity and drought will be the major limiting factors for rice productivity in years to come. The Salt Overly Sensitive (SOS) pathway plays a key role in salinity tolerance by maintaining the cellular ion homeostasis, with SOS2, a S/T kinase, being a vital component. Here, we determined the best cationic lipid nanoparticles to deliver donor DNA and described a protocol using Lipofectamine™ LTX Reagent with PLUS Reagent to mediate DNA delivery into citrus protoplasts. A Cas9 construct containing a gRNA targeting the CsNPR3 gene was transfected into citrus protoplasts using the cationic lipid transfection agent Lipofectamine with or without polyethylene glycol (PEG, MW 6000).

Soybean branch angle is a critical architectural trait that affects many other traits of agronomic importance associated with the plant’s productivity and grain yield and is thus a vital consideration in soybean breeding. However, the genetic basis for modulating this important trait in soybean and many other crops remain unknown. Previously, we developed a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between a domesticated soybean (Glycine max) variety, Williams 82, and a wild soybean (Glycine soja) accession, PI 479,752, and observed drastic variation in plant architecture including branch angle among individual RILs.
