| FSANZ Invites Comments on Food Derived from GM Potato |

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is inviting comments on an application allowing the sale and use of food derived from genetically modified (GM) potatoes. Food products made with GM potatoes, such as potato starch, potato flour, or pre-cooked potato chips, could be imported to Australia and New Zealand if the application is approved. Potato line BG25 has been genetically modified to resist late blight and virus Y infections. BG25 has also been modified to possess traits such as low-reducing sugars and reduced browning. |

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is inviting comments on an application allowing the sale and use of food derived from genetically modified (GM) potatoes. Food products made with GM potatoes, such as potato starch, potato flour, or pre-cooked potato chips, could be imported to Australia and New Zealand if the application is approved.
Potato line BG25 has been genetically modified to resist late blight and virus Y infections. BG25 has also been modified to possess traits such as low-reducing sugars and reduced browning. The safety assessments of FSANZ consider specific genetic modification processes, nutritional content, and any potential allergic or toxic effects on humans.
“FSANZ found no potential public health and safety concerns with this GM potato. It is as safe as non-GM potato varieties,” said Dr. Sandra Cuthbert, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FSANZ.
FSANZ will review and consider all feedback submitted before approving the application. Submission of comments will close at 6 PM (AEDT) on August 29, 2024. All submissions will be published on their website as soon as the public comment period ends.
