In this study, the influences of long-term soil drought with three levels [soil-relative water content (SRWC) (75 ± 5)%, as the control; SRWC (55 ± 5)%, mild drought; SRWC (45 ± 5)%, severe drought] were investigated on sucrose-starch metabolism in sweet potato tuberous roots (TRs) by pot experiment. Compared to the control, drought stress increased soluble sugar and sucrose content by 4-60% and 9-75%, respectively, but reduced starch accumulation by 30-66% through decreasing the starch accumulate rate in TRs.

Developing stress-tolerant plants continues to be the goal of breeders due to their realized yields and stability. Plant responses to drought have been studied in many different plant species, but the occurrence of stress memory as well as the potential mechanisms for memory regulation is not yet well described. It has been observed that plants hold on to past events in a way that adjusts their response to new challenges without altering their genetic constitution. This ability could enable training of plants to face future challenges that increase in frequency and intensity.

Nicotiana benthamiana is widely used as a model plant for dicotyledonous angiosperms. In fact, the strains used in research are highly susceptible to a wide range of viruses. Accordingly, these strains are subject to plant pathology and plant–microbe interactions. In terms of plant–plant interactions, N. benthamiana is one of the plants that exhibit grafting affinity with plants from different families.

Barley lateral spikelet morphology and grain shape play key roles in grain physical quality and yield. Several genes and QTLs for these traits have been cloned or fine mapped previously. Here, we report the phenotypic and genotypic analysis of a barley mutant with round lateral spikelet (rls) from cv. Edamai 934. rls had round lateral spikelet, short but round grain, shortened awn, thick glume and dark green leaves.

Brown planthopper (BPH; Nilaparvata lugens Stål) is considered the most important rice pest in many Asian countries. Several BPH resistance genes have previously been identified. However, there are few reports of genes specific for BPH resistance at the early seedling stage, a crucial stage for direct-seeding cultivation. In this study, we performed a QTL-seq analysis using two bulks (20 F2 lines in each bulk)

Plants compete for light partly by over-producing chlorophyll in leaves. The resulting high light absorption is an effective strategy for out competing neighbors in mixed communities, but it prevents light transmission to lower leaves and limits photosynthesis in dense agricultural canopies. We used a CRISPR/Cas9-mediated approach to engineer rice plants with truncated light-harvesting antenna (TLA) via knockout mutations to individual antenna assembly component genes CpSRP43, CpSRP54a, and its paralog, CpSRP54b.

Of late, global food security has been under threat by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the recent military conflict in Eastern Europe. This article presents the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal related to achieving food security and sustainable development in European Union (EU) agriculture, taking the aforementioned threats into account. In addition, it discusses the future of plant agricultural biotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) systems, considering their potential for reaching the goal of food security.

Leaf morphology and number determine the canopy structure and thus affect crop yield. Herein, the genetic basis and key genes for 25 leaf-related traits, including leaf lengths (LL), leaf widths (LW), and leaf areas (LA) of eight continuous leaves under the tassel, and the number of leaves above the primary ear (LAE), were dissected by using an association panel and a biparental population. Using an intermated B73 × Mo17 (IBM) Syn10 doubled haploid (DH) population, 290 quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling these traits were detected across different locations, among which 115 QTL were individually repeatedly identified in at least two environments.

The color of leaves has been widely used as a marker for the hybrid breeding of foxtail millet; however, few related gene have been cloned to date. Here, we used two F2 populations generated from crosses between the highly male-sterile material 125A with yellow–green leaves, and CG58 and S410, which have green leaves, to identify the genes underlying the yellow–green color of the leaves of foxtail millet. The leaves of 125A seedlings were yellow–green, but they became green at the heading stage. The content of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b was lower, the number of thylakoid lamellae and grana was reduced, and the chloroplasts was more rounded in 125A than in S410 at the yellow–green leaf stage;

In eukaryotes, Maf1 is an essential and specific negative regulator of RNA polymerase (Pol) III. Pol III, which synthesizes 5S RNA and transfer RNAs (tRNAs), is suppressed by Maf1 under the conditions of nutrient starvation or environmental stress. Here, we identified M. oryzae MoMaf1, a homolog of ScMaf1 in budding yeast. A heterogeneous complementation assay revealed that MoMaf1 restored growth defects in the ΔScmaf1 mutant under SDS stress.
